Battleship Trailer Impressions: From Classic Board Game to a Naval Warfare Film with Aliens

Battleship is a 2012 action adventure sci-fi naval warfare film from Hasbro Studios based on a popular pad-and-pencil guessing game of the same name. Who would have thought that a seemingly "story-less" guessing game like Battleship could ever be made into film? Well, here is was Hollywood has to offer and you wouldn't expect what they created with this trailer.

Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epic-scaled action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Inspired by Hasbro’s classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancée; Alexander Skarsgård as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane.

Berg directs this epic action-adventure also produced by Scott Stuber (Couples Retreat), Sarah Aubrey (The Kingdom), Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir of Hasbro (the Transformers franchise), along with Duncan Henderson (Master and Commander) and Jeffrey Silver (300). The film is written by Jon Hoeber & Erich Hoeber (Red).

Back in early 2011, I heard movie rumors that Hollywood is making a movie out of the popular pad-and-pencil naval warfare guessing game of Battleship. The question on my mind back then was how can they make a film out of a seemingly plot-less time waster of a paper game? Well the Battleship film trailer blows me away with its answer.



I give kudos to Hasbro Studios for turning a simple naval war game to a sci fi game of wits with Aliens. Yes, Aliens! To cater to a more geeky and wider audince, Battleship took the sci-fi route and basing from this trailer it works. Hasbro studios being the owner of the Transformers franchise breathe a new life to this classic guessing game. Do not be surprise if the trailer gives of a Transformers film franchise vibe or a Michael Bay-ish type of action sequences and special effects. For it was also Hasbro who gave the green light for the creation of the Transformers film franchise. This is a perfect trailer to build up the hype. It has tons of explosions and good old humans versus aliens type of scenario. the only difference is that it is on water. Hopefully it has a somehow decent plot to hold it all together.

The Darkest Hour Trailer Impressions: How to Survive an Energy Devouring Alien Invasion

The Darkest Hour is a 2011 science-fiction alien invasion themed film slated for a December release from Summit Entertainment and 20th Century Fox. Hollywood has brought us various reiterations of how an alien invasion might happen, but they usually involve some solid and visible threat that everyone might easily fight back or be afraid of, but The Darkest Hour takes a fresh take on it. The 3D action-thriller highlights the classic beauty of Moscow alongside mind-blowing special effects from the minds of visionary filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov and director Chris Gorak. While most films about alien invasions are centered in the United States or have an international scale, Bekmambetov's involvement ensured the premise to be an alien invasion from Russia's perspective.

Aliens will never go away. Just when you thought that you have seen it all, comes a new film that somehow gives it a fresh take. At least that is what The Darkest Hour official film trailer tries to showcase. Did it work? In a way, YES!



Well at least we are given a fresh perspective on an Alien invasion, a Russian one. But do not mistake this as a Russian film, the setting is only in Russia, but the main survivors (protagonists) speaks the international language. The trailer has teased film fans enough to make them go see how will the world survive an invasion from alien energy-devouring light orbs. Upon seeing the trailer one can also ask if to whether these light orbs are indeed formless energy-devouring lights or there are some diabolical alien creature using this as a shield. The mystery of finding out about this is will drive people to watch this. The Darkest Hour gets a nice recommendation for CMAQUEST, as this is now on my "to watch" list.
