The Peer Factor

One of the greatest factor that influence an individual is his/her environment. Among this said environment are "peers". So what does "peer" stands for and what is the "peer factor"?

"Peer" according to Dictionary.com, is a noun which is either (1) a person of the same legal status: a jury of one's peers; or (2) a person who is equal to another in abilities, qualifications, age, background, and social status.

I first heard the term "pear factor" from the radio show of DJ's Nicole Hiyala and Chris Tsuper's "Tambalan Na!" segment on Love Radio (a hit Philippine Radio station). They've discuss this in relation with a listener's inquiry if whether or not he should listen to his peers suggestion to go out and "loose his virginity" to a very "hot and game" chick. The listener or (sms sender) txter is a young man around his 20's with a belief that he should only have sex with the woman he is truly in love with and suppose to marry (a traditional belief here in the Philippines but still is a legend in some parts of the Philippines hahaha). The two DJs, obviously gave this txter the "benefit of doubt" on his current situation. They answered safely that the decision is up to the txter if whether or not he should surrender his principles or not. This is the story behind this post.

peer pressure

Peer Factor can also be peer pressure. According to wikipedia:

"Peer pressure is a term describing the pressure exerted by a peer group in encouraging a person to change their attitude, behavior and/or morals, to conform to, for example, the group's actions, fashion sense, taste in music and television, or outlook on life. Social groups affected include membership groups, when the individual is "formally" a member (for example, a political party or trade union), and social cliques. A person affected by peer pressure may, or may not want to belong to these groups. They may also recognize dissociative groups with which they would not wish to associate, and thus they behave adversely concerning that group's behaviors. Most people who smoke say that they started or continued because of peer pressure.

The chances of a young person getting involved in criminal activity are increased if they have friends who have been in trouble with the law. "

Peer or peers plays an delicate role on how an individual is shape but even so, we should still hold on to our values and know what our hearts truly desire with consideration of all known possibilities and outcomes. For sure you are going to be accepted but are you ready for the consequences?

The ITCH Solution: A Free Multiplayer Online Gaming Community

As you all know, I am a big internet junky. Besides blogging and socializing (through social media network sites) I also am into free online games, whether it is flash or a full pledge game... nothing will get pass under this runny nose of mine.

Random Defense, a Tower Defense screenshot 1 taken from ITCH

One game genre that I love to play besides Role Playing Games (RPG) is Tower Defense or TD. "Tower defense, what the heck is that", if you'll ask. Well basically TD's objective is completely straightforward that is to stop the evil A.I. or "creeps" from getting to their destination (usually a tower). In order to do this, the game is designed to have a number of weapons arsenal or structures that a player can choose to stop the creeps. Each game starts with limited resource in the form of cash at the first part of the game but as you eradicate marching "creeps" your cash goes up enablingyou to upgrade your arsenals and do research to have better fire power against the A.I., but a player needs to watch out - save for too long without getting new weaponry and a player will end up letting the creeps through and loose.

Well what better way to know more about this is by playing it. "Random Defense" is a great Tower Defense genre game, and did I say it free? Yup, it is! I started playing and didn't notice how much time passed. I immediately got hooked to this TD game.

It has 10 different maps with varying difficulties and creeps marching to their doom, or yours if you're not prepared enough. Try and see wether TD is one of your game genre here at "Random Defense".

Random Defense is one of the many free games offered by the ITCH. ITCH is a community for players to enjoy free multiplayer online games.

To Manila: Bus, Van, and Jeep

One week has passed since I last visited Manila (specifically to Carriedo in Sta. Cruz, Metro Manila ~ Hope I got that place right). I renewed my NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) Clearance for it is one of the requirements for the job (that i luckily got hired or was it absorbed, ah! I think it is hired!). The one think that I am irritated about is where the heck did all the buses go? The busses that I am talking about are the provincial buses heading back to Cavite.

Before...

Dating back to the year 2002, where Lito Atienza was still the Mayor of Manila, provincial buses go as far as the "Park and Ride"Bus Terminal alongside SM City Manila. The fare would range from 36-40 Php (Philippine Pesos).

Today...

Alfredo Lim is now the Mayor of Metro Manila, Provincial buses are now limited to Vito Cruz and Buendia area only. If a certain individual, let's say a student from Technological university of the Philippines who resides at Cavite wants to go home. He/she must first ride a jeep all the way to Buendia area and then ride the Bus, or he/she will still proceed to "Park and Ride" but will eventually take the Van heading back to Cavite.

What is the big issue here? Hmm let me enlist it here:

Disadvantage...

- Buses going and heading back to Cavite have a fare rate around 46 Php while if one would take a van, the fare would cost 50 Php.
- Student's (though i am no longer one) time will be wasted. Instead of waiting for provincial buses to pass near the road in front of their colleges/universities, they are required to walk all the way to the terminal only to ride a van that has a fare higher than a regular bus ride would normally cost. I know it is the right venue but it is not really efficient.
- If one will not hike towards the terminal he/she would commute from their respected school via jeep going to Buendia to where the provincial buses are now designated to load and unload passengers. Still inefficient, both for the pocket and the health.
- Traffic along Taft area has greatly increased as undisciplined jeepney drivers rampage the area.
- CaviteƱos are now burdened with the worry of how much money and time they'll waste just to get back home.

Advantage...

- Metro Manila Jeep Drivers has gained more income and the monopoly of the passengers has turned back once again to them.
- Vans also gain more income because individual with no choice (if in a hurry) will eventually afford their services.

Well, guess this will be the problem of the next CaviteƱo commuters going to and back from Manila. What will happen in the next years? Will Mayor Lim Change this city ordinance? That is for us to find out...

A Pre-Graduation Entry

WEll I've decided to update today. The Night before Christmas... The Nightmare on Elm Street... The Neverwinter Nights... The Never ending Story... the... ok enough of that! Tonight is the night before the Big (or small) Graduation Day.
I am really not that prepared for tomorrow, nor that excited, I am just relieved that finally after five long years I can finally finish up College (and my course is not even a five-years course *.* ). I will soon be earning my own money. All my angst and complains in life (The Deprivation!) will finally be answered or not. I've been also busy with completing my requirements for a job (yeah! I was hired!) in an Outsourcing Company. Let me get back with the Graduation "thang" (nope that's not a typo ^^,) which will be tomorrow morning at 8:00 in the morning. We (the graduates) only practiced three times. Yes, we already are "mature" and "intelligent" people but for me the three practice is not enough for the supposed to be "formal ceremony" due tomorrow. Let me do a recap..

Day One - I didn't attend the practice because I was "self-proclaimed" busy that time. The reasons are completely valid... "Slacking" (Nyaah!). According to practice goers all they did was walk and emulate how will they march on and off the venue. The Venue is in "Tagaytay International Convention" and the first two practices where in or old dear Auditorium. Well I'm glad I didn't attend that "fruitful" practice.

Day Two - They practiced again at the Calip-Atienza Hall (the School Auditorium) but this time all they did was sing the graduation theme "Go the Distance" (what a very unpredicatable song *.* - with pun intended). It also makes me remember the korean television epic series "The Legend" (not its real title, GMA 7 again edited the majestic title into a forgettable and lame title) now shown in GMA 7 and assigned individual who'll be participating in the "Baccalaureate Mass". Well I am one, I will be carrying the flag of our dear the Computer Science Department flag. I wish I did attend that time because they never practiced that part again in Day 3.

Day Three - The only practice I've attended in the actual venue. The hilarious part was I did attend it but was too early for it. I though that it is like the other two practices that would start at 8 in the morning, so I woke up early, and hope that I wouldn't get lost in Tagaytay because I don't visit Tagaytay that often and on my own (usually it is back on the elementary and high school day's field trip events). so I took off at around 6:45 and arrived at the venue at exactly 8:00 am! Hurray! I was not late... way not too late. I've noticed that not a single student was there and finally a reply from a fellow graduate texted that the practice was at 1:oo in the afternoon. Hahaha I can't help but to laugh at my situation that time. I did't go home because it is just going to be a waste of time and money. Thus, I've waited, and waited to the point where roots almost popped out my feet hehehe. until I went to the venue (yup I stayed outside because I don't want to be coined as "Excited") and still I was the first soul to come. Later the place got packed with students. We practiced the new marched. Yep! the March practice in day 1 was completely change because of the change in actual environment. We practiced the whole exercise, and sang "Go the Distance", and that was generally it. Glad I didn't attend the first two, thanks to my slacking hehehehe.

The only part that i am worried with is the Baccalaureate Mass, what will I do. Well I will just use my instinct and pray that i will not be the first in line XD. Happy Graduation to me! Hahaha at least somebody greeted me... myself nyah! hahaha

Chris Tells - A Man in Need of Wisdom

A man came to Socrates and asked him for wisdom. Socrates quickly dismissed him, telling him to come back when he really wanted wisdom. This experience repeated itself several times, with the man coming back and asking for wisdom, until Socrates took the man down to a body of water and stuck his head under the water.

After holding him under for about 10 seconds Socrates pulls the man back up and asks ‘What do you want?’ To which the man replied, ‘ I want wisdom great teacher.’ Socrates put the mans head under the water again, this time holding him under for 30 seconds. Pulling the man up he asks again, ‘What is it that you want?’ The man once again replies, ‘I want wisdom great teacher.’ Socrates holds him under the water again this time for much longer.

The man began struggling, and choking, and gasping for air. At the point that he was about to fall unconscious, Socrates pulled him out of the water and asks one final time, ‘What is it that you want?’ This time all the man can scream is, ‘I want air, I want air!’ Socrates leaves the man saying, “when you want wisdom as much as you wanted air, you will find it.”

GMA 7 and ABS CBN: Philippine Television Companies, Ingrates?

Here I am again! Back with another personal perspective and review. This time I will tackle about the issue between GMA Kapuso and ABS CBN Kapamilya.

First of all what is an ingrate?
By google definition it is...

- - - - - - -

a person who shows no gratitude
wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

- - - - - - -

Have you in anyway happened to tuned in to ABC 5 before? If yes, then we are on the right track.

Well ABC 5 is a decent Philippine channel with some great titles and yet it is always overshadowed by the popularity (or inferiority) of the two Major Networks... yup! GMA and ABS CBN.

First off, what do you call when a station buys a franchise of an hit American gameshow or talent search and then later, calls it the first in the Philippines even if there was already one before(bought by a not so popular station)? Well the answet is simple check the definition inside the series of dash above.

ABC 5 first bought the franchise of "Wheel of Fortune" back in the 2002 to validate that here is the Wikipedia Link of it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel_of_Fortune_%28Philippine_game_show%29) . The host then was Rustom Padilla who now as we know it went out of the closet and declared his sexuality; but now a new version of the game emerged and as if like the first game here in the Philippines (in ABC 5) did not exist. Are they taking a fool out of the Philippine TV Viewers?

ABC 5 also bought first the franchise of Pop Idol last year... and yet GMA 7 is calling its new franchise of the Idol as the very first Idol which is a complete hoax. What is striking here is this sentence from the definition of Pinoy Idol in Wikipedia:

"Pinoy Idol is the second franchise of Idol series in the Philippines (the word Pinoy is the colloquial form of the word Filipino). It is set to replace Associated Broadcasting Company's (ABC) Philippine Idol, which was the first and the original franchise, after it was not been awarded by FremantleMedia to ABC for its supposed-to-be second season. GMA Network promoted Pinoy Idol as "the first Idol competition in the Philippines" during its New Year's Eve 2007 Presentation, and therefore will not recognize Philippine Idol and its winner Mau Marcelo. " more of Pinoy Idol here and Philippine Idol here

Guess that is the condition for GMA to have the rights to use the name Idol in the show, even if it means not recognizing a great talent such as the first ever Philippine Idol Mau Marcelo and its fellow Filipino station ABC 5.

Guess both of the two Giants (GMA and Network) have something in common this time, besides their masquerading as a "Stations that unites the Filipino" ... Well call me judgmental but what else would you call them?

Let us not be a slve to these stations by being a loyal viewer? There are a lot of interesting and great series out there! You just have to surf your TV channels, wether you're in cable or not. If I was to choose to what to watch whether Sis, Boy and Kris and RPN 9's 10:00 - 11:00 am reruns of last nights show, I would go with RPN 9! Cold Case, Terminator, Burn Notice, Eureka, Bionic Woman are some great shows which are an escape from the traditional cheap before lunch TV shows of both TV Giants.

Well you can't blame me from hating the two stations, I still watch them every now and then but after their advertisement wars (view my ABS CBN vs GMA Seperating Filipinos post), I've finally see through them... Just plain companies hungry for dominion and power. If I am wrong, then shame on me, If I am right well who is to be ashamed anyway? They have been playing with us for years, what is another decade anyways?
